Kevin Kordek : Theta functions and the structure of Torelli groups in low genus (Dec 2, 2014 4:25 PM)

The genus g Torelli group T_g can be thought of as the non-linear part of the genus g mapping class group. Despite nearly four decades of intense study, the structure of T_g remains largely mysterious when g > 2. In this talk, I will describe how theta functions, certain classically-defined holomorphic functions familiar to algebraic geometers, play a role in determining the structure of T_g when g is small.
