Edward Waymire : Dispersion in the Presence of Interfacial Discontinuities

This talk will focus on probability questions arising in the geophysical and biological sciences concerning dispersion in highly heterogeneous environments, as characterized by abrupt changes (discontinuities) in the diffusion coefficient. Some specific phenomena observed in laboratory and field experiments involving breakthrough curves (first passage times), occupation times, and local times will be addressed. This is based on joint work with Thilanka Appuhamillage, Vrushali Bokil, Enrique Thomann, and Brian Wood at Oregon State University.
